Reopening of the historic Astoria garage by ALPINA Parking in Vienna

  • 300 parking spaces back in operation from Saturday, November 29
  • Christmas reception with 3 days of discounted parking on the 1st weekend of Advent (Sat., 29.11./Sun., 30.11.) including Monday, December 1
  • Modernization of parking processes planned

Vienna. The ALPINA Parking Group, which is active in Austria and Germany, will take over the operation of the historic Astoria Garage from November 29, 2025 from 1918 in the Josefstadt district of Vienna. The building, which was converted into a tower garage with 442 parking spaces in the 1930s, is one of the first daylight garages in Vienna and one of the largest and oldest of its kind in Europe. Not far from Rathausplatz, Volksgarten and Museumstraße, the parking garage is centrally located at Trautsongasse 4 in the 8th district of the Austrian capital. Situated on the edge of the “inner city”, the building with its roof level and glass dome offers around 18,000 m² of usable space on six floors. From Saturday November 29, at 10:00 a.m. the Astoria Garage by ALPINA will open its doors around the clock.

Following the closure of the traditional garage in July 2024, operations will start after more than a year, just in time for the Christmas season, initially with around 300 parking spaces, as the new owner, Jürgen Hesz, announced in October. The necessary renovation work had already begun in recent weeks. The management contract negotiated between Meta Astoria Garagen GmbH and the Vienna-based operating company Alpina Parking GmbH provides for a long-term term and, in the long term, the complete renewal of parking operations.

“With ALPINA Parking, a suitable operator has been found who will optimally accompany the challenging revitalization of the Astoria garage with an individual location concept,” says Jürgen Hesz, Managing Director of Meta Astoria Garagen GmbH.

“We are delighted to reopen the traditional parking garage this Advent weekend and to welcome the first visitors in person. In the future, we would like to offer all our customers modern, convenient parking in a historic ambience and thus a little luxury in everyday life,” emphasizes Maximilian Bichlmaier, CEO of ALPINA Parking, who comes from Vienna. The parking garage operator also plans to reactivate the other 100 parking spaces in the building over time.

Welcome gift on the first weekend of Advent

For three days, from Saturday, November 29, through Monday, December 1, ALPINA Parking is offering all parking guests in the ASTORIA garage a special rate of just 10 Euro for the whole day (24 h). In Vienna’s city center, it is currently usual to pay up to 50 euros per day. Within the Vienna Ring, the historic city center, parking fees are usually 5.50 euros per hour. The price for short-term parking in the Astoria garage, which is still outside the city center, is 5 euros per hour and the daily maximum 45 Euro. Long-term parkers pay around 350 euros net (420 euros gross) per month. Several ALPINA parking garage managers are scheduled to look after the parking garage on site.

An initial technical solution for an uncomplicated parking process will be implemented for the opening at the weekend. In the long term, the plan is to switch to a fully digitalized operation with modern pay stations and automatic license plate recognition. The new parking technology will be supplied by the established system manufacturer Arivo from Graz.

“Our aim is to integrate a super-modern mobility hub into the historic walls: with charging points for electric vehicles, full digitalization and differentiated offers for park customers. At the same time, we want to preserve the flair of the historic park, for example with signage reminiscent of the period after the First World War. There is still a long way to go before we have realized all these plans, but we are already very much looking forward to working in and on the beautiful Astoria Garage,” says Maximilian Bichlmaier.

Gersthofen/Augsburg. ALPINA Parking has been awarded the contract to operate around 400 parking spaces at the City-Center Gersthofen near Augsburg. This includes an underground garage with two parking levels and around 50 outdoor parking spaces near the center. ALPINA Parking manages three municipal parking garages in Rüsselsheim am Main

Rüsselsheim. In September 2025, ALPINA Parking from Munich took over the management of three central municipal parking garages in Rüsselsheim. The management contract between the city and ALPINA Parking Rüsselsheim GmbH was concluded in March 2025 and covers the management of a total of 742 parking spaces, including 242 in the An der Festung parking garage at Frankfurter Straße 5, 233 in the Park & Ride parking garage at Rüsselsheim station, Grabenstraße 42, and 267 parking spaces in the centrally located underground garage at Löwenplatz for visitors to the city center.

City Councillor Simon Valerius explains: “The new service provider Alpina offers modern parking technology and significantly improves the booking and payment options. It is also pleasing that the multi-storey parking lot on Grabenstraße is no longer exclusively reserved for public transport customers, but can now also be made available to the general public. The city is thus expanding its offer for short-term parking outside the public street space.”

ALPINA Parking supports both cash and cashless payment methods at all three locations. ALPINA had already been awarded the contract for the management of the three Rüsselsheim parking garages at the end of 2024 as part of a Europe-wide tender.

“We are very proud that we were able to win over the city of Rüsselsheim with our concept in the highly competitive tendering process,” explains ALPINA CEO Maximilian Bichlmaier. “With simplified processes, high service quality and offers individually tailored to the locations, we want to make parking as uncomplicated and pleasant as possible.”

New processes, moderate parking fees and more security

The new parking technology includes automatic license plate recognition, which eliminates the need for the usual parking ticket. The license plate number is automatically recorded on entry and only needs to be entered at the pay station for access control and payment. On exit, the license plate number is checked by the cameras and, if payment has been made, released. The parking charges set by the city remain moderate.

In terms of security, the zones around the pay machines and the entrances and exits will be monitored by camera in future. In the underground car park at Löwenplatz, a fast-closing roller shutter will also be installed at the initiative of the city to prevent unauthorized access to the entrance and exit areas. In future, the central entrance to the underground car park can only be accessed by those authorized to park, as both entrances will be secured by an access system.

Environmentally friendly parking with webshop, QR code and local contact person

The flexible payment system introduced by ALPINA Parking is particularly advantageous for users of the three parking garages. Payment can be made in cash or online via a QR code at all three locations.

“It is important to us that a service employee from ALPINA is also personally available for our customers in all three parking garages in the Löwenplatz underground car park and that the parking process can be handled in a resource-saving manner without the use of paper tickets,” emphasizes Maximilian Bichlmaier.

ALPINA Parking: Pioneering work at the St. Georg Hospital in Leipzig

ALPINA Parking operates 600 parking spaces at the Klinikum St. Georg with one of the most modern parking handling systems in Germany.

Leipzig. ALPINA Parking Deutschland GmbH from Munich has taken over the operation of around 600 parking spaces at Klinikum St. Georg in Leipzig. The parking garage operator for individual management and utilization concepts concluded the long-term lease agreement with Klinikum St. Georg gGmbH at the beginning of the year. ALPINA Parking’s new portfolio in Leipzig now includes all parking spaces and the parking garage at the St. Georg Hospital at Delitzscher Straße 141 in Leipzig’s Eutritzsch district. ALPINA Parking has pioneered the introduction of innovative, fully digitalized parking operations with its technology partner SKIDATA and successfully implemented one of the most modern parking management systems in Germany.

“We are delighted that we were able to convince the St. Georg Hospital with our “free-flow” concept and that we were able to successfully implement this pioneering technology for demanding operations with a wide variety of user groups,”summarizes Maximilian Bichlmaier, CEO of ALPINA Parking. “With the new operating concept, we offer all our customers a great deal of flexibility, convenient digital services and continued moderate prices.”

ALPINA Parking now manages the existing 4-storey parking garage with around 300 parking spaces and around 300 additional parking spaces on the hospital grounds at the growing St. Georg hospital site in Eutritzsch in the north of Leipzig. In future, the parking facilities are to be expanded by a new multifunctional building with an additional 400 parking spaces.

Operational parking concept

The ALPINA Parking service was developed in close cooperation with St. Georg Hospital and is tailored to customer needs: from short and long-term offers to ticketless payment with a QR code and affordable rates for patients, staff and visitors. The first 30 minutes are always free of charge. After that, an hourly rate of €1.00 applies with a maximum daily rate of €7.00. Employees in nursing and shift work pay a reduced rate of just €0.50 per 24 hours. This puts the rates among the lowest in Germany. In addition, the “pay-per-use” solution means that only the time actually used is charged for short-term parking. Weekly and long-term contracts are also available.

Simplified payment processes

For uncomplicated handling, you can book, pay or manage a contract via a user-friendly web store. There is no need for an app. Parking is quick and easy: when you enter the barrier-free parking areas, a camera records your license plate number. Before leaving, you pay at the pay machine and enter your license plate number. Payment can then be made in the traditional way by credit or debit card and soon also in cash. Payment by QR code (scan) via the webshop is particularly convenient. Digital payment is still possible up to 72 hours after the exit.

In addition to the webshop, a contact person from ALPINA Parking is available to all parking customers on site between 08:00 and 17:00. It is also possible to contact the ALPINA office in Munich or the ALPINA Parking 24-hour service. All parking areas at the Klinikum St. Georg will continue to be open around the clock.

At the request of customers and users, ALPINA will also double the number of pay machines in September: a new pay machine in front of the parking garage will also allow cash payments in future, and another machine will provide an additional point of contact at the north entrance. This brings the total number of pay machines at the site to four.

Pioneering work for modern, flexible and user-friendly services

In order to meet the growing number of users looking for a parking space, ALPINA and its partner SKIDATA have opted for one of Germany’s most innovative parking technologies and a variety of options that make parking convenient and uncomplicated.

Maximilian Bichlmaier explains: “All system components are interconnected using 5-G technology. As far as we know, this has never been successfully implemented in Germany before. The challenge was to implement the innovative solutions for the very different user groups and the large number of parking spaces in a technically flawless way.”

Digital and environmentally friendly parking space management

The new features of the parking garage and parking areas include cameras for barrier-free license plate recognition, LED screens, pay stations and a digital booking and payment system. This eliminates the need for parking ticket machines and tickets. Vehicles can enter the hospital grounds without stopping and navigate to a free parking space using a new guidance and signage system. An occupancy display in front of the parking garage informs drivers of free parking spaces before they enter. Precise digital processes are used to implement efficient and sustainable parking space management, which helps to avoid environmentally harmful and disruptive traffic searching for parking spaces. The digital payment system without parking tickets and paper consumption also contributes to environmentally friendly parking operations. In addition, ALPINA Parking will integrate a new lighting concept with sustainable LED technology into the parking garage on Delitzscher Straße.

“Around 200 additional LED lights on all parking decks will significantly increase safety and comfort, and the fresh coat of paint on the building will also make a positive visual change and improve quality,” says Jörg Kollmeier, Head of Operations at ALPINA Parking.

New parking structure for maximum functionality

The traffic routes and parking facilities on the clinic site, which is more than 100 years old, are not designed to meet today’s requirements and the significant increase in traffic. Alpina has therefore reorganized and signposted the existing parking areas. This will make it much easier to find the parking spaces. The parking areas on the site have been clearly marked: as defined parking areas P1 (multi-storey parking lot) to P6, which can now be specifically accessed by all user groups. Generously dimensioned information banners and signs make it easy to find available parking areas. The fixed parking spaces for employees have been retained in the same number, but are now uniformly signposted and arranged in a more structured way than before.

The already difficult parking situation at the site due to a lack of parking spaces is currently made even more difficult by the extensive construction work on the hospital grounds. This can always lead to temporary restrictions. As an interim solution, St. Georg Hospital is therefore providing employees with a nearby, spacious free parking lot.
